“I only see my double chin. Do I need the whole face?” Kieu hears this question on WhatsApp more than any other. The real answer comes after a skin check at the studio. But before that, you can see quite a lot by yourself — if you look in the right light, from the right angles, and know what you are looking for.
This is a five-minute exercise in front of a mirror. When you finish, you will know whether you are worried about one area or several, and your message to Hugo Beauty will be much clearer than “I want a slimmer face”. Every area mentioned here can be done with HIFU 10D MPT; the point is simply to understand your own face before you ask.
Minute one: the right light, the right mirror
Stand facing a window in daylight, with the light falling straight on your face. Avoid ceiling lights: light from above throws a shadow under the chin and makes any fullness look heavier than it is. A bathroom mirror with a light above your head is the worst place to judge.
Tuck your hair behind your ears and keep your skin bare or very lightly made up. Open your phone camera and switch off beauty mode and filters. If you have a straight-on photo of yourself from about 3–5 years ago, keep it open beside you. It shows which area has changed most — usually not the one you expect.
Minute two: the front view — jawline and both cheeks
Look straight ahead with your chin level and your face relaxed. Follow the line from below your ear down to your chin, left side then right side. Is it still one continuous line, or does it break at the angle of the jaw, where the skin starts to gather into a small soft shape?
Then look at the cheeks. Is the fullness still where it used to be, or has it moved lower and made the fold beside the nose deeper? Your old photo makes this easier to see than the mirror alone. Write one short note for each side, for example “left: jaw angle breaks, cheek fine; right: same as left”.
Minutes three and four: side view, head down, and a gentle pinch
Turn about 45 degrees to the left, then to the right, chin still level. Is the angle between the chin and the neck still clear, or has it softened into one curve? Does the area under the chin hang a little when your face is relaxed?
Now lower your head as if you were reading your phone. Do the horizontal lines on your neck get deeper, and does the area under the chin fold into a layer? Then use two fingers to pinch the skin gently on the cheek, at the jaw angle and under the chin. Where do you lift a thin, loose layer of skin, and where do you hold a thicker, soft mass? In a photo they look the same, but they are two different things.
Finally, smile widely, then frown. Lines that only appear when you move come from muscle. Lines that stay when your face is relaxed are the ones related to loose skin.
Minute five: signs that one area is enough
Read your notes again. One area is probably enough if you noticed this:
The change sits in one place: only the area under the chin folds when you look down, while from the front the jawline is still continuous and the cheeks are where they were.
Or only the neck lines get deeper when you look down, while the face looks neat from the front and from the side.
Compared with your photo from 3–5 years ago, only one area looks different; the others have hardly moved.
When you pinch, that one area feels clearly looser than the areas next to it.
One case is worth knowing in advance: if the fullness under your chin pinches up as a thick, soft mass (fat) rather than loose skin, HIFU can only help a little. Kieu will tell you that plainly at the skin check, even when the answer is “not yet”.
Signs that several areas are changing together
On the other hand, your face is changing in several areas at once when you notice this:
From the front, the jawline breaks at the angle and the cheeks have also moved lower, deepening the fold beside the nose.
From the side, the chin–neck angle has softened and the area under the chin hangs at the same time.
When you pinch the cheek, the jaw angle and under the chin, they all feel about equally loose; no single area stands out.
Compared with your old photo, the whole face seems to have “dropped” a little, not just one spot.
In that case, read our page on full-face and neck HIFU before you message us, so you know how a multi-area session is planned.
Why one area at a time can leave your contours out of step
Many people prefer to “do the area that bothers me most first, and the rest later”. If only one area is changing, that is the right choice. But when several areas are changing together, doing them months apart often leads to three problems.
First, each area is at a different stage. The result is clearest at month 2–3, once the new collagen has formed. If you do the jawline this month and the cheeks a few months later, there is a period when you see one area already tighter right next to one that has not started to change.
Second, the eye reads a face along one continuous contour, from below the ear to the chin and down to the neck. Whichever part tightens first makes the part next to it look heavier to you, even though it has not changed at all. Some clients come back feeling the area not yet done “got worse”, when in fact it is only being compared.
Third, it is hard to judge. When areas are done at different times, your comparison photos no longer tell you which change came from which session. A plan agreed at the start, whether it is done in one session or several, lets you know what result you are looking at.
None of this means you always need the full face. The final decision is made at the free skin check of about 15 minutes: Kieu looks, gently pinches each area and tells you clearly which areas to do before you pay anything. Before you come, you can see HIFU prices by area to get an idea. HIFU is usually one session, maintained every 12–18 months.
Frequently asked questions
Can a mirror check replace the skin check at the studio?
No. The mirror helps you know which area worries you and write a clearer WhatsApp message. Tissue thickness, whether the fullness under the chin is fat or loose skin, and which areas to do are decided at the free skin check of about 15 minutes at the studio.
I only see a double chin. Do I need the full face?
Not necessarily. If the jawline is still continuous from the front and the cheeks have not dropped, one area may be enough. If the fullness under the chin is mostly fat, HIFU can only help a little, and Kieu will say so.
Can I do one area first and another later?
Yes, but it is better to agree the whole plan at the start. The result is clearest at month 2–3, once the new collagen has formed, so if areas are done far apart, each one is at a different stage and it is hard to compare.
How should I take photos to send to Hugo Beauty?
Face a window in daylight, not a ceiling light. Take a front photo and two 45-degree side photos with your chin level and your hair behind your ears, with no filters or beauty mode.
Whether I do one area or several, how often should I repeat HIFU?
HIFU is usually one session, maintained every 12–18 months. When you are ready for the next one is decided after a skin check, not by one fixed schedule for everyone.
