Facial laser hair removal before a wedding, photoshoot or big event: when to start, and when to stop

There is one big difference between laser on your legs and laser on your face before an important day. Legs can be covered. Your face cannot, and on the day it is photographed from thirty centimetres away under studio light. Foundation sits on upper lip hair and the fine hair along the cheeks in a way nobody notices in daily life, but a camera does.

So the question Hugo Beauty hears most about the face before a wedding is not "can it be done" but "when do I have to start to be ready". This article counts back from the day itself so you can plan, for the three areas the studio works on: upper lip, chin and full face. Prices, session numbers and how to choose an area are on the facial laser hair removal in Ho Chi Minh City page; here it is only about timing.

Why "one session the week before" does not work

Laser does not make hair disappear during the session. Hair grows in cycles, and each session only reaches the hairs that are in their growth phase. Those hairs shed over the next one to two weeks; the "sleeping" ones come up over the following weeks and need the next session. That is why an upper lip or chin course is usually 6 to 10 sessions, four to six weeks apart. One session right before the wedding gets you to the big day with an upper lip that is slightly pink and not yet thinner.

What you need before the day is not a finished course. It is enough sessions for the hair to be clearly thinner, and a last session far enough away for the skin to be back to normal.

The key milestone: hair is clearly thinner after session 3–4

With dark upper lip and chin hair, you usually see the hair thinner and growing more slowly after the third or fourth session. That is enough for wedding photos, even though the full course continues afterwards. With four to six weeks between sessions, four sessions take three to four months. Add the waiting time if you currently tweeze or wax, and the time for the last session to settle, and the safe plan is to start five to six months before the day.

If you only have two or three months, two sessions are still possible and the hair will be less visible, but go in knowing it will not be much thinner yet. The studio will say this clearly at the consultation rather than let you expect more.

A sample wedding timeline (day W)

  • W − 24 weeks (6 months): consultation. Kieu looks at your actual hair and you choose upper lip, chin or full face. Stop tweezing, threading and waxing from now so the roots grow back.

  • W − 20 weeks: session 1. From here, only shave lightly between sessions if needed.

  • W − 15 weeks: session 2.

  • W − 10 weeks: session 3.

  • W − 5 to 6 weeks: session 4. This should be the last one before the wedding.

  • W − 4 weeks: pre-wedding photoshoot, if you do one. Skin is back to normal, hair clearly thinner.

  • W − 2 to 3 weeks: makeup trial on your real skin, no need to shave the lip first.

  • Day W: no laser session in the two weeks before.

  • After the wedding: sessions 5 and 6 to finish the course if you want to.

If your pre-wedding photoshoot is months before the ceremony, as is common in Vietnam, count back from the photoshoot. That is the day your face is looked at most closely.

A sample timeline for a profile shoot, graduation or event (day E)

For a single photoshoot or an event with photos, you do not necessarily need four sessions. Two sessions four to six weeks apart already make upper lip hair less visible for many clients, so the minimum plan is to start 10–12 weeks before: session 1 at E − 11 weeks, session 2 at E − 5 weeks, then nothing but a light shave if needed from E − 2 weeks. If you only have three or four weeks, it makes more sense to do one session to try it and start the real course after the event, or use a temporary method for the day.

How far from the day the last session should be

After a facial laser session the skin is usually pink and warm for a few hours, some clients have small red dots around the follicles for a day or two, and the hair sheds over one to two weeks. Hugo Beauty therefore recommends the last session at least two weeks before the day, ideally three to four, so nothing shows under foundation and the shedding is finished. Do not squeeze in a session during wedding week.

Sun, beach trips and tanned skin before the wedding

Many brides do a beach photoshoot or a holiday before the wedding. Tanned facial skin needs to wait two to four weeks before a laser session, and Hugo Beauty does a free test patch first when the skin is darker than usual; for darker skin tones the studio uses the 1064 nm setting. Put sunny trips in the gap between two sessions, and wear sunscreen on your face for the whole course, for the laser and for the photos.

Other face appointments to plan around

Before a wedding there are usually peels, microneedling, facials and the makeup trial. The general rule: keep peels, microneedling or skin lasers at least two weeks away from a facial laser session; pause retinol and AHA/BHA for five to seven days before each session; the makeup trial needs no special preparation, just a clean face before your laser appointment. The full skincare side is covered in skincare and makeup around facial laser hair removal. If you are also doing the bikini area for the honeymoon, the count-back for that is in when to start bikini laser before a wedding or beach trip.

If your facial hair is fine and light

An honest note so you do not plan around the wrong expectation: laser does not catch fine, light or grey hair well, and Hugo Beauty does not promise results on it. If the hair on your cheeks is this type, the better plan for the wedding may be a gentle shave before the shoot, or leaving it and letting your makeup artist work with it. Kieu will tell you when she sees the actual hair, and will not suggest a full-face package if most of the hair is this type.

Work out your own dates in a minute

Take the day. The last session should be no later than two weeks before it, and ideally four weeks before. From that point subtract four to six weeks for each session you want. Add four weeks if you currently tweeze, thread or wax. That is your start date. If that date has already passed, message Hugo Beauty on WhatsApp with your wedding date and Kieu will fit the number of sessions to the time you have. Upper lip and chin are 150,000 VND per session, 800,000 VND for six; details on the facial laser price list.

Frequently Asked Questions

My wedding is in two months. Is it too late?

Not for two sessions four to five weeks apart, with the last one at least two weeks before the day. The hair will be less visible but not much thinner yet. The studio will tell you what to expect before you decide.

Should I have a laser session right before my makeup trial?

No. Leave at least a week between a session and the trial so the makeup is tested on normal skin, the same as it will be on the day.

I am flying abroad for the wedding. How long before the flight should the last session be?

At least a week, with sunscreen on your face while you travel. If the destination is a sunny beach, make it two weeks.
