Threading, waxing, tweezing or laser for upper lip hair: what the next twelve months look like with each

The upper lip is the smallest area most women ever remove hair from, and the one they check most often. It sits right under the nose, right where people look when you talk, right where a phone camera points. So almost everyone with dark upper lip hair has tried two or three methods already: tweezers at home, a small face razor, threading at a salon, wax strips, bleaching cream, and more recently laser.

This article does not try to pick a winner. Each method suits someone. It asks a more useful question instead: if you choose one method and stick with it for twelve months, how often will you be doing it, what will your skin look like, and what will it cost? If you only want prices and session numbers for laser, the facial laser hair removal in Ho Chi Minh City page has them. This is the comparison.

Why the upper lip is different from arms and legs

Three things make the upper lip harder to manage at home. The skin is thin, with almost no padding, so tweezing and waxing hurt more than they do on the legs. The hair grows back fast: shave today and you can feel it in two or three days, and because the hair is cut straight across it looks darker and feels coarser than it really is. And it cannot be covered. Leg hair hides under trousers; upper lip hair does not.

That is why most clients who ask Hugo Beauty about the upper lip are not people with a lot of hair. They are people who are tired of remembering to tweeze every week, or who have a few small dark marks around the lip after years of plucking and waxing.

Shaving: fastest, but every other day

Small face razors have become popular because they are quick, painless and take the fine fuzz too. Over twelve months, shaving means roughly 100–150 sessions in front of the mirror. The hair does not grow back thicker, a point covered in our piece on laser hair removal myths, but the blunt ends look darker and feel rough by day two. On the upper lip, frequent shaving also tends to cause tiny red bumps and dry skin around the mouth.

Cost: almost nothing beyond razors and moisturiser. What you pay is time and attention.

Tweezing: clean, hair by hair, but painful and marking

Tweezing is the most common home method because you control every hair. The root comes out, so it lasts two to four weeks, which is 15–25 rounds a year of ten to twenty minutes each if there is a lot of hair. The problem is not the hair but the skin. Each pulled hair is a small injury to the follicle, and years of it leave dark dots, enlarged pores and ingrown hairs at the corners of the mouth. Many clients arrive at the studio with a darker upper lip that is not hair at all, but the trace of years of tweezing.

Threading: neat and even, but it stings and needs regular salon visits

Threading takes the fine hair too and gives a clean, even line, and it is cheap per visit, which is why it is everywhere in Saigon. But the sting on the upper lip is real, the skin stays red for an hour or two, and the hair is back in two to three weeks, so that is 17–25 salon visits a year. If you break out around the mouth, the repeated friction of the thread can make that worse.

Waxing: three to four weeks of results, but the skin takes the most

Wax removes the hair and a layer of surface skin cells with it, so the upper lip is usually red and hot for a few hours afterwards, sometimes with light peeling. Results last three to four weeks, which is 12–17 sessions a year. On thin upper-lip skin that sees a lot of sun, years of waxing are one of the most common reasons for a darker patch above the lip. If you use retinol or AHA/BHA products on your face, waxing the lip is more likely to lift skin.

Bleaching: the hair stays, it just shows less

Bleaching cream lightens the hair so it is less visible, and it suits people with fine upper lip hair who do not want to touch the root. The downside is that the hair is still there, visible from the side in sunlight, and the chemicals can sting or cause a rash on sensitive skin. That is about 10–12 rounds a year. It is a sensible choice for fine, light hair, which is exactly the hair laser does not catch well.

Laser: the fewest sessions, but it needs the right hair and the full course

Laser works differently from the five methods above. The energy is absorbed by the pigment in the hair and weakens the follicle under the skin. No pulling, no scraping, no chemicals. Over twelve months, an upper lip course is usually 6 to 10 sessions, four to six weeks apart, and between sessions you only shave lightly if hair appears. That takes you from dozens of home sessions to fewer than ten studio visits, and after the course many clients only need an occasional touch-up.

Two honest points. First, laser works well on dark, coarse upper lip hair; on fine, light or grey hair it does not catch well, and Hugo Beauty does not promise results on that type. Kieu looks at your actual hair during the consultation and tells you before anything is done. Second, the feeling on the upper lip is sharper than on the underarms because the skin is thin and close to the bone, but the cooled tip keeps it easier than tweezing or waxing for most clients. Our article on what laser hair removal feels like goes into detail.

Prices at Hugo Beauty: 150,000 VND per upper lip session, 800,000 VND for six sessions and 1,200,000 VND for ten. Session numbers, preparation and common questions are on the upper lip, chin and full face laser page.

How to choose, based on your hair and your habits

If your upper lip hair is fine and light and only visible up close, bleaching or a gentle shave is enough and laser is not the right choice. If the hair is dark and clearly visible, you are tweezing or waxing every month, and the skin above your lip has started to darken, laser is the only one of the six methods that reduces how often you deal with it, and the only one that gives the skin a rest. If you are not sure which type your hair is, message Hugo Beauty on WhatsApp or come in. Kieu looks at the actual hair before saying yes or no, and the studio does not suggest a package for hair that laser catches poorly.

Frequently Asked Questions

I tweeze or wax my upper lip now. How long should I wait before laser?

At least four weeks, so the root grows back under the skin. Laser needs the pigment at the root to work. If you need to tidy up in the meantime, shave lightly instead.

My upper lip hair is fine and light brown. Will laser work?

It depends on the actual hair, which Kieu looks at during the consultation. Laser catches dark hair well; on fine and light-coloured hair it catches much less, so Hugo Beauty does not promise results on this type. Kieu will look at your upper lip and tell you clearly before anything is done, so you can decide whether to try one session or choose another method.

Do I have to stop threading and waxing during the laser course?

Yes. Between sessions, only shave lightly. Threading, tweezing and waxing remove the root that the next session needs.
