How to Prepare for Brazilian Laser Hair Removal: A Simple Timeline
You have booked a full bikini session, or you are about to, and you want to know how to prepare for Brazilian laser hair removal. This guide follows the calendar, and each step comes with the reason behind it.
A full bikini is the bikini line plus everything inside it, the level many places call a Brazilian. At Hugo Beauty this service is for female clients only. Every session is one-to-one, in a private room, with a female specialist from start to finish. Prices, number of sessions and packages are on our page for bikini and Brazilian laser hair removal in Ho Chi Minh City; this article is only about getting ready.
Four weeks before: stop waxing, plucking and threading
This is the most important step, and the one people forget most often.
Laser works on the pigment inside the hair, so it needs the root to still be in the skin. Waxing, plucking and threading all pull the whole hair out of the follicle. If you come to a laser session before the root has grown back, there is almost nothing for the laser to work on, and the session is mostly wasted.
What to do: from today, if you want to stay tidy, only shave. Shaving cuts the hair at the surface and leaves the root in place, which is exactly what the laser needs. If you waxed last week, move your first session so that four full weeks have passed. Coming earlier does not make anything faster.
From this point, also think about the sun. For two weeks before your session, avoid strong sun and skip self-tanning products. The laser finds the hair through the contrast between hair colour and skin colour. Freshly tanned skin reduces that contrast, and it also takes in more heat, so it gets red and sore more easily. One beach trip is enough to tan the bikini area.
When you pick a date, check your cycle too (the reason is in the section on the day itself). If you take anything that makes your skin more sensitive to light, tell your specialist before you book.
One week before: pause retinol, AHA and BHA, and check your skin
Five to seven days before your session, stop using retinol, AHA and BHA on the bikini area. These products make the outer layer of skin thinner and more sensitive, so under laser heat it can sting and stay red for longer. A few days off is enough for your skin to settle.
This week, also look closely at the area. If you have a cut, irritated skin or an inflamed ingrown hair, do not push to keep the date; message Hugo Beauty and move it by a few days. Giving your skin time to calm down is a normal reason to reschedule.
24 hours before: how to shave, including the hard-to-reach areas
Shave the full bikini area 12 to 24 hours before your session. Hair above the skin does nothing for the laser; it only absorbs heat where you do not need it and makes the session feel hotter. Shave too close to your appointment and your skin has no time to calm down. Shave two or three days before and the hair is already back. Twelve to 24 hours is the right window.
How to shave gently:
Take a warm shower for a few minutes first to soften the hair.
Use a new razor or a sharp blade. A dull blade scratches more easily.
Apply a thin layer of fragrance-free shaving gel or foam.
Shave in the direction the hair grows, in short strokes.
Use your free hand to hold the skin gently flat.
For the hard-to-reach areas, such as the groin crease, the inner area and the back:
Rest one foot on the edge of the bathtub or a chair so the skin stretches naturally.
Put a small mirror on the floor, or use a hand mirror, so you can see where you are shaving.
Go slowly, with the blade slightly angled and short strokes. The skin here is thin and folded, and rushing is how scratches happen.
Choose unbroken skin over a perfectly smooth result; going over one spot again and again leaves it sore.
After shaving, rinse with cool water, pat dry and put on cotton underwear.
On the day: clean skin, loose clothes, and your period
Clean skin. Shower before you come and leave the bikini area bare: no cream, no oil, no deodorant. Any product left on the skin can heat up under the laser and cause stinging you do not need.
What to wear. Loose clothes, ideally cotton; a dress or an elastic-waist pair of trousers is easiest. This is for the trip home: right after the session your skin feels warm, and tight or non-breathable fabric rubs and keeps the skin red for longer.
Your period. If you are on your period, the bikini line is still fine. For a full bikini most people prefer to reschedule. Just message us; it is a normal reason to move an appointment and nobody asks for an explanation.
In the room. Bikini sessions are always one-to-one, in a closed room, with a female specialist from start to finish. Disposable underwear is provided and there is a place to change; the area not being worked on always stays under a towel. Hugo Beauty uses Diode Laser with a cooled tip that stays in contact with your skin for the whole session. If it feels too strong, say so and your specialist will lower the setting. A full bikini session takes about 25 to 30 minutes.
The 48 hours after: clean, dry and loose
For the first 48 hours, keep the area clean and dry, and wear loose cotton. Skip hot showers, the sauna, the pool and the gym, because heat and sweat keep the skin red for longer. Change out of damp clothing as soon as you can; in Saigon's climate this is the most useful habit.
Mild redness for a few hours and small bumps around the follicles on the first day are normal. Do not exfoliate for at least five to seven days. Around the second week the hair will start to shed; let it fall out on its own and do not pull it, because pulling takes you straight back to the four-week problem. The full routine is in our aftercare instructions.
Your next session is four to six weeks later. Between sessions you can shave to stay tidy, but still no waxing and no plucking.

Frequently Asked Questions
I waxed my bikini area two weeks ago. Should I keep my appointment?
It is better to move it. Waxing pulls the root out of the follicle, and the laser needs the root in the skin to work. Wait four full weeks after waxing before your first session; in the meantime, only shave if you want to stay tidy.
My skin is red or scratched after shaving. Can I still have the session?
Mild redness after shaving usually settles within a few hours, which is why we suggest shaving 12 to 24 hours before. If the area is still scratched or clearly irritated on the day, message Hugo Beauty and move your session by a few days so your skin can calm down.
Is a razor or an electric shaver better for the bikini area?
Both are fine, as long as they cut the hair at the surface and do not pull the root. A razor gives a closer result but needs a new blade and a slow hand in the folds. An electric shaver is less likely to scratch and suits skin that gets irritated easily.
Can I put moisturiser or deodorant on the bikini area on the day?
It is better not to. Cream, oil and deodorant leave a layer on the skin that can heat up under the laser and sting. A clean shower before you come is all you need. After the session, if you want to moisturise, choose a gentle product.
