Many of us take good care of our face. We have a cleanser, a serum, and we put sunscreen on again in the afternoon. But our hands are almost forgotten. Yet hands do the most work: dishes, laundry, holding the motorbike handle in the Saigon sun. Kieu often sees a face that still looks young next to hands that look older.
This article explains why hands show age early, the first signs, a simple check at home and daily care. At the end, Kieu explains when home care is not enough and how far HIFU can help.
Why hands show age before the face
Most of the reasons come from daily habits, not only age.
The skin is very thin. It is much thinner than facial skin, with tendons and bones right under it, so a small loss of firmness shows quickly.
There is little padding underneath. The face has a fat layer that keeps skin looking full. On the hand this layer is thin and gets thinner with the years, so veins and knuckles show more.
Sun every single day. On a motorbike, the backs of your hands sit right in the sun, while your face has a mask and helmet. Years of this make skin dry, darker and less elastic.
Lots of hand washing and soap. We wash our hands many times a day. Soap removes the natural oils that keep skin soft, so it gets dry, rough and crepey.
Less collagen with age. From around 25, the body makes collagen more slowly, and hands rarely get the serums and creams the face gets.
5 signs your hands are aging
Look at the backs of your hands in window light and compare:
1. Thin skin that is slow to go back after a pinch. When you pinch gently and let go, it does not spring back at once.
2. Fine, crepey lines. Many tiny lines, like thin paper, most clear around the knuckles.
3. Veins that show more. Blue veins look more visible, especially in hot weather.
4. Brown spots and age spots. Small brown dots or darker patches, common in people who ride a lot.
5. Dry, rough skin. Skin feels rough and cracks easily around the nails.
Signs 1 and 2 are about skin firmness. Sign 3 is about the padding under the skin. Sign 4 is about pigment. Sign 5 is about moisture. Each needs different care, so knowing your group helps you choose.
A simple hand check at home
This takes one minute and you do not need any tools:
Step 1. Put your hand flat on a table, fingers relaxed.
Step 2. With the thumb and index finger of your other hand, gently pinch the skin in the middle of the back of the hand. Hold for about 3 seconds.
Step 3. Let go and count how long it takes for the skin to become flat again.
If the skin goes flat almost at once, your hand skin is still quite elastic. If it takes a second or two, the skin is starting to get thinner and less firm. Try both hands; your main hand often looks a little older.
This is only a home check, not an exact measurement. Water intake, cold weather or fresh hand washing can change the result, so try it on different days. A photo in window light today is a nice way to compare later.
Daily care for your hands
Most things that age hands quickly are habits, so small changes help. Kieu suggests five:
Sunscreen on the backs of your hands. Apply it every morning like on your face, and again after washing. This is the most important step to stop brown spots from growing.
Gloves for riding and washing dishes. Sun gloves when you ride, rubber gloves for dishes and laundry. They are cheap and help more than any cream.
Hand cream after every wash. Keep one tube by the sink and one in your bag. Apply while hands are still a little damp, and a bit more at night.
Gentle exfoliation once a week. Use a mild scrub, rub softly, then apply hand cream. Not more often, because the skin here is thin.
Cool water and mild soap. Hot water and strong soap dry the skin fast. Pat your hands dry gently.
After a few weeks, many people feel their hands are softer. These habits also help any result last longer later.
When home care is not enough: what HIFU 10D MPT can and cannot do
Hand cream and sunscreen keep skin healthy and less dry, but they cannot make thin skin firm again. When the back of the hand is already thin, slow to go back after a pinch and the fine lines are clear, many women start looking for something more. One option is HIFU hand rejuvenation with HIFU 10D MPT.
At Hugo Beauty, Kieu uses a professional HIFU system with 10D MPT technology, the same system used for HIFU face lifting in Ho Chi Minh City, but with a shallow cartridge and gentle energy, because the skin on the back of the hand is very thin, with tendons and bone right underneath. The energy helps the skin tighten and build new collagen.
What HIFU can help with: the back of the hand looks firmer and smoother, fine crepey lines are less visible, and the skin feels more solid. These are signs 1 and 2 above.
What HIFU cannot do: HIFU does not fade brown spots or age spots, because those are about pigment, not loose skin. HIFU also does not make veins disappear, and it does not replace the padding that has become thin under the skin. If brown spots worry you most, you need a method made for pigment, and Kieu will tell you this honestly at the skin check.
About timing: right after the session and for the first 1–2 weeks, the skin feels slightly tighter as old collagen contracts; the real result builds gradually over the following 8–12 weeks as new collagen forms. The result is clearest at month 2–3, once the new collagen has formed. One session typically holds for 12–18 months and then fades gradually with age and skincare habits.
One session for both hands is about 200–250 shots and costs 1,000,000–1,500,000 VND. It takes about 1–1.5 hours including the consultation. You can go back to work and ride your motorbike as usual, with no downtime. You can also see HIFU prices by area to compare with areas on the face and neck.
Frequently asked questions
At what age should I start caring for my hands?
The earlier, the better. Sunscreen and hand cream are good habits from your 20s. Ways to firm the skin, like HIFU, are usually considered when the back of the hand starts to get thin, which is common from around 35–40.
Can hand cream make my hand skin firmer?
Hand cream makes skin softer, less dry and reduces fine lines caused by dryness. But cream cannot make thin skin firm again. For firmer skin you need something that works deeper, like HIFU.
Does HIFU fade age spots on the hands?
No. Age spots and brown spots are about pigment, and HIFU does not work on pigment. Sunscreen on the backs of your hands every day is the best way to stop spots from growing.
Does HIFU on the hands hurt, and do I need time off?
Each shot feels like a short hot prickle, a little stronger than on the face because the skin is thin and close to the bone. Your hands may be a little red for 1–2 hours, and slightly swollen or numb for a few days. You do not need time off and can go to work and ride as usual.
How often should I repeat HIFU for my hands?
One session usually holds for 12–18 months. After that you can repeat it to keep the result, depending on your skin and how you care for your hands every day. Kieu will check your hands again before suggesting the next session.
