Back From the Beach With a Tan: When Is a Laser Facial Safe, and What to Do Meanwhile

A week in Phu Quoc, Nha Trang or Hoi An, and you come back to Saigon with a lovely even tan — maybe a little sore in places. A message I often get: “Can I do the laser facial now to brighten up before I fly home?” My honest answer is usually: not yet. Let’s wait a little.

Here is why tanned skin should wait before any laser, how long to wait for each situation, and what to do meanwhile so your skin recovers faster, evens out, and is ready for a Laser Glow Facial when the time is right.

Why tanned skin should wait before a laser

When you spend time in the sun, your skin makes extra pigment to protect itself — that is what a tan is. This new pigment sits near the surface and reacts strongly to laser light. If we use a laser while you are tanned, part of the energy is caught by that pigment, the skin heats more than it should, and the chance of dark marks or uneven patches goes up.

That is why, before any Laser Glow Facial to brighten your skin, I always ask when you last spent a lot of time in the sun. Waiting a few weeks costs nothing; rushing can mean months of waiting for your tone to even out again.

A tan, a sunburn or naturally deeper skin: three different things

A tan: skin is darker than usual, not painful, not peeling. Very common after a few beach days, even with sunscreen.

A sunburn: skin is red, hot, sore, and may peel a few days later. The skin is damaged and needs to be left alone.

Naturally deeper skin: your everyday tone is deeper, not because of recent sun. No waiting is needed, but I set the laser at lower energy and tell you honestly how much change to expect.

A quick self-check: compare the skin on your face with the inside of your upper arm, where the sun rarely reaches. The bigger the difference, the more tanned your face is right now.

How long to wait

Checking skin tone closely before deciding on a Laser Glow Facial after sun, Hugo Beauty Ho Chi Minh City

The rule I use in my studio: at least 2–3 weeks after your last day of strong sun, with good sun protection during that time. With a sunburn, we wait until it has fully healed — no redness, no soreness, no peeling — and then start counting the 2–3 weeks.

That is the minimum, not an automatic “yes”. When you come in, I still look at your skin first. If your face is still clearly darker than your arm, I lower the energy or suggest waiting longer, and I tell you why.

Why 2–3 weeks? That is roughly how long it takes for fresh pigment to start fading and for sun-stressed skin to calm down. But the clock only really runs if you keep protecting your skin: in Ho Chi Minh City the sun is strong enough to keep topping up a tan on your daily walk to a café, so sunscreen and a hat during the waiting weeks matter as much as the waiting itself.

For people living in Saigon this is easy to plan. For travellers, the best trick is simple: book the laser before the beach, not after.

While you wait: what helps your skin

  • Cool and hydrate: rinse with cool water, use aloe vera gel or a gentle moisturiser, and re-apply during the day if your skin feels tight.

  • Sun protection every day: SPF 50, a wide hat, sunglasses. This is what helps a tan fade fastest.

  • No scrubs or peels to “take the tan off”: sun-stressed skin turns red and blotchy more easily.

  • No lemon, fresh turmeric or DIY masks: they irritate easily right after sun.

  • Water and sleep: skin recovers better when your body is well hydrated.

If you want some gentle pampering while you wait, a soft hydrating facial is enough. I explain when a regular facial is the better choice in Laser Glow Facial vs a spa facial.

Beach and Saigon on the same trip: the right order

Many visitors spend a few days in Ho Chi Minh City and then fly to an island, or the other way round. The order that works:

  • Saigon first, beach after: do the Laser Glow in Saigon, wait 48 hours, then head to the beach with sunscreen and a hat. How to care for your skin during those two days is in the first 48 hours after a Laser Glow Facial.

  • Beach first, Saigon after: if you only have a few days in Saigon right after the beach, there is usually not enough waiting time. In that case I will suggest saving it for your next trip.

It can feel a bit disappointing, but I would rather be honest from the start than send you home with a dark mark as a souvenir.

What I check before we start

Before any laser pass, I ask you a few things: when you last had strong sun, whether you burned or peeled, whether you use self-tan, and whether you waxed or had laser hair removal on your face recently. Then I look at your skin in good light and compare it with an area that rarely sees the sun.

If your skin is not ready, I say so clearly and we don’t go ahead — you simply move the booking. If you are staying across town or still on the island, send me a daylight photo on WhatsApp first, so you don’t make a trip for nothing.

Frequently asked questions

I have naturally deeper skin. Can I have the Laser Glow?

Usually we can consider it. Light to medium skin tones see the clearest glow; for naturally deeper skin, I use lower energy and tell you honestly beforehand how much change you are likely to see, so you can decide.

I was only at the beach for a day or two and I’m just slightly darker. Do I still need to wait?

It is still best to wait about 2–3 weeks. Send me a photo and the date of your last strong sun; if your colour has barely changed and you protected your skin well, I will look at it and decide with you.

Does self-tan make a difference?

Yes. The colour sits on the skin surface and makes it harder to set the laser correctly. Wait until it has fully faded before booking, and mention it in your message.

Will the Laser Glow remove my tan?

Please don’t expect that. A tan fades by itself when you protect your skin from the sun. The Laser Glow evens and brightens your tone once your skin is ready — it is not a way to strip off a fresh tan.

Not sure if your skin is ready?

Send me a photo of your face and the date of your last beach day on WhatsApp. I will give you an honest answer.
